Foit and Viñas Joy named Player and Defensive Player of the Week
LIU Brooklyn’s volleyball team had an impressive weekend as it took two out of three at the Cavalier Classic including a big win over the previously undefeated Alabama. The Blackbirds were led by impressive performances by senior Annika Foit and junior Adriana Viñas Joy and as a result the duo was named Player of the Week and Defensive Player of the Week, respectively, by the Northeast Conference on Monday.
Foit, the reigning two-time NEC Player of the Year, had an amazing weekend where she led the Blackbirds to a 2-1 record during the 2014 Cavalier Classic, that is hosted by the University of Virginia. She had a career-best 32 kills against Alabama and finished with 67 kills on the weekend. She also added nine digs, three blocks and two services aces. Against Navy, she had her third double-double of the season with 17 kills and 12 digs to go along with two blocks.
Viñas Joy, the two-time NEC Libero of the Year, also had a big weekend as she had 21 digs and a service ace against Virginia, 17 digs and a service ace against Alabama and 22 digs and three services aces against Navy.
Foit and Viñas Joy were both named to the Cavalier Classic’s All-Tournament Team for their efforts. This isn’t likely the last time either player will be honored with weekly awards this season as Foit has taken 16 weekly honors in her four-year career and Viñas Joy has now won three.
The Blackbirds have had an absolutely dominating run over the past few years and have gone undefeated in NEC play since they lost in the NEC finals in 2011 to Sacred Heart. Their home opener is set for Wednesday, Sept. 10 when they will take on Fresno State at 6:00 p.m. The Brooklyn Eagle will be there with coverage.
