The St. Joseph’s College men’s basketball team clinched the Hudson Valley Intercollegiate Athletic Conference regular season title on Tuesday with a 92-75 victory over Sarah Lawrence. It was their fifth win in a row and the first time they have won the HVIAC’s regular season title since 2009-10.
Three players had double-doubles in that game as Michael Megafu picked up his team leading 14th double-double with 29 points and 10 rebounds. David Louison had 21 points and 11 rebounds and Matt O’Neill had 11 points and 11 boards. This was the first time the Bears had three double-doubles in a game since Louison, Megafu and Emitt Hightower did it on Dec. 7, 2012. There was nearly a fourth too as Vernon Maddox finished with 15 points and eight assists.
The Bears led by as much as 14 points in the first half, but Sarah Lawrence cut the lead to nine points by halftime. The Bears opened up with a couple of baskets in the second half to increase the lead to 13 and it never went back to single digits after that.
St. Joseph’s is now 6-0 in conference and 14-8 overall this season. The Bears have just one more conference game to play this season before the HVIAC tournament begins on Saturday, Feb. 15.
