The Public School Athletic League’s Brooklyn Borough Playoffs begin on Tuesday with eight teams facing off in a round-robin style tournament to determine bragging rights in the borough. The first round is kind of weak, but at least one of the four games could end up being a classic and the second round and finals will not disappoint.
FIRST ROUND MATCHUPS
No. 1 Lincoln vs. No. 8 Brooklyn HS for Law and Technology
No. 2 Jefferson vs. No. 7 Lafayette
No. 3 South Shore vs. No. 6 Bedford Academy
No. 4 Westinghouse vs. No. 5 Brooklyn Collegiate
TEAM TO BEAT: It’s Lincoln without a doubt. Maybe last year they would have cared about winning a borough title, but this season Tiny Morton probably considers this a preseason to the playoffs. A kind of warm up. If they lose this it’ll be shocking. Right now the Railsplitters’ sights are set on the state championship.
THE SLEEPER: If I had to pick a team other than Lincoln to win this thing it would have to be South Shore. Jefferson was better during the regular season, but I just feel like South Shore is more complete, possibly a little bit better defensively.
UPSET ALERT: As far as I’m concerned, Lincoln, Jefferson and South Shore are moving past the first round so the upset would have to be Brooklyn Collegiate beating Westinghouse. That is entirely possible too even though Westinghouse has already beaten them twice this year. It’s very hard to beat a team, especially at this level, three times in a season.
WHO WINS: Lincoln wins. Isaiah Whitehead, Desi Rodriguez and co. cannot be stopped. For a team in Brooklyn to beat Lincoln it’s probably going to have to be Bishop Loughlin in the state tournament.
1ST ROUND PREDICTIONS: Lincoln over Brooklyn HS for L&T, Jefferson over Lafayette, South Shore over Bedford Academy and Collegiate over Westinghouse.
