The McDonald’s All-American team was officially announced on Wednesday with three kids from Brooklyn being named to the list — Isaiah Whitehead from Lincoln, Bianca Cuevas from Nazareth and Sierra Calhoun from Christ the King.
“It means everything,” Whitehead told Adam Zagoria of SNY.tv. “Starting your high school career, you strive to be one so this just feels amazing.”
None of the three names are much of a surprise as they are easily the best three players from Brooklyn right now. Khadeen Carrington from Bishop Loughlin, and a future teammate of Whitehead’s at Seton Hall, was the only one I felt that had an outside chance aside from the three. Anybody else would have been a major surprise.
Whitehead is the first player named to the team from Brooklyn, or New York City for that matter, since Bishop Loughlin’s JayVaughn Pinkston was picked in 2010. He joins former Lincoln stars Stephon Marbury, Sebastian Telfair and Lance Stephenson, who were also chosen for the team in their day.
