Everybody from Brooklyn knows about “He Got Game” — the classic Spike Lee joint starring Denzel Washington and Ray Allen as fictional Lincoln High School star Jesus Shuttlesworth. It’s a classic and based on a recent Associated Press report it might be getting a sequel sometime soon.
“Sequels to most movies are always fluff and not as good as the first,” Allen recently told the AP. “But it’s something we’ve been talking about for the last couple months. If we get a really good story line and are able to bring everybody back, then it would be something worth doing.”
“Hopefully it works out,” Allen added.
I personally have mixed feelings about this. On one hand, that movie was a classic despite Allen’s lack of acting skills and to revisit the story might be fun. But then again, perhaps the story is better left alone. I mean, it could just be depressing watching Shuttlesworth playing in China a la Stephon Marbury and Sebastian Telfair. It’s also been quite some time since Spike did a movie that was really worth watching.
It seems like there could be interest though. Allen said that he’s still called Jesus regularly to this day and a recent ESPN poll showed that 68 percent of people wanted to watch a potential sequel. I guess we’ll have to wait and see.
“Not one day goes by where I walk in here and guys don’t say that they didn’t watch it last night or it wasn’t on,” Allen said. “I don’t know who’s in charge of delegating what gets on TV, but it seems like that movie’s been on a lot the last two or three months.”
