The LIU Brooklyn Blackbirds turned the ball over a season-high 26 times in a rough 66-52 loss against Robert Morris in Brooklyn on Saturday. With the loss, the Blackbirds fall to 4-14 overall this season and are just 2-5 in Northeast Conference play.
The Blackbirds lasted about five minutes in this game as they briefly led 10-7 early when Aleisha Myers hit a three, but at the 15:30 mark Artemis Spanou made back-to-back layups to spark a 12-1 run that put LIU Brooklyn down for good.
The Blackbirds would cut that lead to three with 9:08 left in the first, but that was as close as they would get before they trailed by eight headed into halftime. In the second half, they got to within seven points with 6:32 left to play, but scored just three points in the final five minutes.
Cleandra Roberts led with 15 points and 6 rebounds. Sophie Bhasin had 13 points with four rebounds off the bench and Myers had 10 points on 3-of-6 from behind the arc. Spanou had 23 to lead RMU and the game.
At 2-5 in the NEC, the Blackbirds have fallen to eighth place in the conference tied with Wagner. They still have 11 conference games left so there is time to turn things around, but so far they haven’t inspired a whole lot of confidence that they’ll be able to do that.
They play St Francis University (PA) on Monday night. They are tied for fourth place in the NEC with a 4-3 record and are 6-12 overall.
