The LIU Brooklyn had a chance to win in the final seconds, but Cleandra Roberts couldn’t get a shot up at the buzzer as the Blackbirds lost a close one to Mount St. Mary’s 63-62 at Knott Arena in Maryland Monday night.
The Blackbirds and Mount traded leads six times during this game, they were tied six times, and neither team ever had a more than an eight point lead. Mount led by eight when Sydney Henderson hit a jumper with 12:59 left in the first half and the Blackbirds led by eight when Letava Whippy hit a pair of free throws with 14:36 left in the game.
LIU Brooklyn had a slim two-point lead with 17 seconds left in the game after Whippy hit one of two free throws. That didn’t last long as Jacqueline Brewer hit a three with nine seconds to put Mount up by one. The Blackbirds got down court on their final possession, but Mount’s tenacious defense kept Roberts from getting that final shot off.
Roberts led the Blackbirds with 21 points on 8-of-16 from the floor, Whippy had 12 points, and Sophie Bhasin had 11. Kelly Robinson also contributed with nine points on a perfect 4-of-4 from the floor.
Mount is a tough team that gave a talented St. Francis Brooklyn squad a run for its money last week and the Blackbirds nearly had this victory. As it is, they out-shot Mount 43.2 percent to 41.8, they also had slightly more rebounds 31-30, slightly more points in the paint 30-28, and more points off turnovers 21-15. It still doesn’t give them a win, but it is an impressive performance.
The Blackbirds fall to 2-11 on the season overall and 0-2 in Northeast Conference play. Their next match is a big one against the St. Francis Terriers at the Barclays Center on Saturday.
