Brooklyn College had a couple of strong soccer teams this season with the women taking home the City University of New York title and the men losing in the semifinals. It should be no surprise then to see seven players, four from the men’s team and three from the women’s team, named to the Eastern College Athletic Conference All-Star team this week.
The women named to the ECAC All-Star team include senior midfielder Shani Abrahams, sophomore midfielder Sayla Flores and freshman defender Jasmine Fermin. On the men’s team seniors Dmitry Prokofyev and Taras Frankivskyy, junior Fernand Grisales and sophomore Oleg Tykhonravov were named.
Abrahams and Fermin were both named to the 2013 CUNYAC First Team All-Stars. Abrahams set personal career-highs with 15 goals and 10 assists this season while Fermin led a defense that registered 11 shutouts and held opponents to 17 goals. Flores was a CUNYAC Second Team All-Star who had nine goals and 10 assists to go along with her CUNYAC Championship MVP award.
Prokofyev, who previously was named CUNYAC Player of the Year, was the only one of the men to be named to the First Team. He led the team with 16 goals and five assists. Frankivskyy led a defense that shutout opponents eight times to go along with three goals and four assists. Tykhonravov had eight goals and four assists.
The awards are voted on by head coaches within the ECAC Division III membership that includes 27 different schools across five conferences.
