Boys and Girls High School in Bedford-Stuyvesant is the oldest public high school in Brooklyn. It’s legendary for graduating NBA players like Lenny Wilkens, Connie Hawkins and Pearl Washington, but it will soon have a new name.

To honor the memory of Nelson Mandela, who passed away on Dec. 5, 2013, Mayor Michael Bloomberg announced that he will rename Boys and Girls to The Nelson Mandela School for Social Justice.

Mandela had been to Boys High during a New york visit in 1990 shortly after he was released from prison. New York City has always been fond of Mandela and even gave him a key to the city in 2005.
