The St. Francis Terriers are off to a great start to their season as they beat Miami and Florida Atlantic University in their first two games of the season. Helping to lead the way has been freshman, and South Shore High School product, Wayne Martin, who was named the Northeast Conference’s Rookie of the Week after a 17-point performance against Miami on Friday.
Martin came off the bench in the 66-62 overtime victory over Miami, but ended up playing 28 minutes, which was more than two of the starters. He finished with 17 points, eight rebounds two assists and two steals as he shot 6-of-13 from the floor. Six of those points came in the final five minutes of regulation to force an overtime.
Martin’s game on Monday, a 59-57 win against FAU, didn’t count toward his Rookie of the Week honors, but he was solid in that game as well as he came off the bench and played 20 minutes with 12 points and four rebounds. He was once again clutch down the stretch in that game as his layup put the Terriers ahead 52-50 and then he did it again with the final basket of the game to win 59-57.
When I spoke with Terrier coach Glenn Braica earlier this month, he didn’t list Martin among the players he considered as potential starters, but he did mention that the rotation would be fluid early on and that he didn’t expect to finish the season with the same rotation that he started it with. If Martin continues to play this way, he might be a starter sooner than expected.
