With their entire starting staff on the bench, the Brooklyn Nets’ reserves lost to the Boston Celtics 101-97 in Boston Wednesday night. It was a close game the entire time, but a rough second quarter ultimately doomed them.
Everyone was out including Brook Lopez, Kevin Garnett, Paul Pierce, Joe Johnson and Deron Williams. Pierce didn’t want to play in Boston before the regular season, D-Will is still rehabbing his ankle and the rest were just taking a night off. Andrei Kirilenko was also out with his back injury.
Tyshawn Taylor led the Nets with 15 points with three assists and a steal in 26 minutes. His plus/minute of -10 was the worst on the team though. Andray Blatche also played well and, because it’s the preseason, he attempted six three-pointers and made two. Overall, he finished with 14 points, five rebounds and a block. Mirza Teletovic connected on 2-of-5 threes. Reggie Evans also had 11 points and eight rebounds.
Jason Terry made his Nets debut as he’s been out while recovering from knee surgery until this point. He finished with seven points, three assists and two rebounds while shooting 1-for-5 from behind the arc in 24 minutes.
An oddity of the night was Mason Plumlee. He played 28 minutes and only even attempted a shot once. He did grab nine rebounds, all offensive, had three steals, an assist and a blocked shot. Those are not terrible numbers, but where is the confidence on offense?
Gerald Wallace, who recently upset his coaches for criticizing the team’s effort, was really the only ex-Net to play. In 36 minutes, he had 14 points, five rebounds, five assists and a steal. Kris Humphries played just five minutes, had two points and two turnovers. Keith Bogans and Marshon Brooks didn’t play at all.
The Nets don’t head back to Boston again until Jan. 26. Mark that date on your calendars because even though this game was boring, that one will be huge as Pierce and KG return. The Nets final preseason game will be Friday night in Miami against the Heat.
