HIGH SCHOOL GAME OF THE WEEK

WHO: No. 7 New Utrecht (5-2) at No. 9 Midwood (5-2)

WHEN: Saturday, Oct. 26 at 11:00 a.m.

WHERE: Midwood High School Athletic Complex

WHY THIS GAME IS IMPORTANT: These are two strong teams in Brooklyn and a very close matchup that will be exciting, but the best thing about this game is going to be the explosive running backs. Midwood’s Brandon French might be the best back in Brooklyn and if he isn’t then it could easily be Jaleel Brown. Either way, there is a chance that these two rush for over 400 yards between them.

French has the most yards of any Brooklyn running back in the PSAL with 925 plus another 103 yards receiving and 13 touchdowns. French is a great two-way player also with 40 tackles, a sack and a fumble recovery. Brown is right behind French with 918 yards rushing with 10 touchdowns and 150 yards on kick returns with another touchdown. Brown is potentially better on defense as he has 52 tackles and two interceptions.

It’s almost silly to compare the two players and decide which is better because they are both so good. This game is going to come down to the defenses and whichever team can figure out a way to stop the running game first will win the game.

I like both teams on defense. New Utrecht’s backs are all fast, strong and athletic guys: Michael Velasquez, Richard Wright, Vonn Grant, and Alex Boston. They can shut a passing game down. The key here could be Kadeen Dryden. He’s so big and quick that he has 40 tackles and seven sacks this season.

On the other hand, Midwood’s quarterback Nicholas Falzone could be a difference maker. The junior has 455 yards passing with five touchdowns and three interceptions in seven games. It’s going to be tough against the Utes’ backs, but he if can play well enough that they can’t just throw everybody at French then that could lead to a big game from the running back.
