Blackbirds volleyball continues to rack up weekly honors

The LIU Brooklyn Women’s Volleyball team is an undefeated 9-0 in Northeast Conference play this season after beating Fairleigh Dickinson and Sacred Heart over the weekend. The Blackbirds strong play earned them two more weekly honors, as Tamara Ignjic was named Molton/NEC Player of the Week and Nichole Okeke was named Molton/NEC Co-Defensive Player of the Week, and they now have weekly awards nine different times.

Ignjic had 25 kills in total including 15 against Sacred Heart and 10 against Fairleigh Dickinson. She is currently third in the NEC with 3.39 kills per game behind teammate Annika Foit (4.07) and Dianis Mercado (3.68) of Sacred Heart. Other Blackbirds named Player of the Week were Foit (three times) and Vera Djuric.

Okeke was recognized after totaling 11 blocks over the weekend including eight against Fairleigh Dickinson. She is currently third in the NEC with 1.13 blocks per game behind Rachel Dunlap of Central Connecticut (1.46) and teammate Jessica Rice (1.19). She’s also sixth in the conference with a 26.6 hitting percentage. Rice was named Defensive Player of the Week twice and Adriana Vinas Joy was also honored once.

The Blackbirds have five games left this season including an upcoming match against rivals St. Francis Brooklyn on Saturday.
