New Utrecht quarterback Angelo Carrera found wide receiver Richard Wright in the end zone for a pair of touchdown passes during an impressive 16-0 victory over Canarsie in Bensonhurst on Friday.
On the Utes first drive of the game, Carrera found Wright on the right side for an 11-yard touchdown pass with 3:28 left in the first. Carrera then found Michael Velasquez open in the end zone to complete the two-point conversion to go up 8-0.
New Utrecht’s defense made that lead stand up for the rest of the first half with Vonn Grant breaking up a pass that would have gotten Canarsie a touchdown or at least to within 10 yards of striking distance. Dayquan Russell later picked off a pass at mid-field with just 32 seconds left in the half.
The Utes scored again to close the third quarter as Carrera hit Wright with a 27-yard touchdown pass this time. It was a rough pass, as Carrera was rushed on the play, but a beautiful catch by Wright who grabbed it in the back right corner of the end zone. They again converted for two points to go up 16-0.
That was pretty much the game. Canarsie did nearly get back in it, but its quarterback Antonio Snell was ejected with just under eight minutes remaining for punching another kid and that ended any threat. Damian Charles was his replacement and though he gave a good effort, it was obvious that he wasn’t prepared to come in and play quarterback.
Carrera completed eight of his nine pass attempts and threw for 119 yards including two touchdowns. Wright had 52 yards receiving, and, of course, the two touchdown catches. Canarsie’s Ramshar Clarke rushed for 76 yards on 21 attempts and Snell ran for 51 yards on eight attempts.
