A couple of LIU Brooklyn’s women athletes had a great week last week as junior Annika Foit was named Northeast Conference Player of the Week in Volleyball and freshman Tori Shinkowitz was named NEC Rookie of the Week in soccer the NEC announced Monday.
This is the third week this season that Foit, the reigning NEC Player of the Year, has received the weekly honors. It was hard not to give her the award this time around as the Blackbirds swept the three game Blackbird Invitational against Cornell, Colgate and Fairfield. She was named tournament MVP after she collected 65 kills, 49 digs, seven blocks, and five service aces over the weekend. Foit’s most impressive performance came against Cornell when she record a double-double with 22 kills and 22 digs in five sets.
Shinkowitz took the honors as her team went 1-1 with an impressive 5-1 win over St. Peter’s on Friday and a tough 1-0 loss to Harvard on Sunday. She had a goal and an assist in the victory over St. Peter’s. The assist was on the game winner. She failed to score against Harvard, as her entire team did, but she was impressive nonetheless and barely missed a shot during the 17th minute.
This was Foit’s third Player of the Week award. Earlier this season, Jessica Rice and Adriana Vinas Joy each took home Defensive Player of the Week honors for the volleyball team. Jenn Peters was Rookie of the Week earlier this season on the soccer team.
