LIU Brooklyn’s all-time leading scorer Jamal Olasewere competed with Team Nigeria at the 2013 FIBA AfroBasket tournament, his first international tournament since graduating, and came away with a disappointing seventh place finish as they failed to qualify for the FIBA World Cup next year.
Olasewere, the youngest player on the team, came off the bench and averaged 5.85 points and 2.1 rebounds per game while playing 17.8 minutes per contest. His best game came against the Central African Republic when he scored 14 points, made 5-of-9 shots and grabbed five boards during a 112-75 win. Unfortunately, he could not replicate that success as Team Nigeria dropped to seventh place.
Only the top three teams from this tournament will go on to the FIBA World Cup of Basketball which will be played in Spain next year so obviously, at least for now, Olasewere’s time with Team Nigeria is over. He will now head over to Italy where he will begin playing for Vanoli Cermona when its season starts on Oct. 13.
Another former LIU Brooklyn player, Kyle Johnson, is still playing in the FIBA EuroBasket tournament with Great Britain.
