By now most Nets fans have heard the insult, the Brooklyn Celtics. Its supposed to be some shot at the team as if Deron Williams, Brook Lopez, and Joe Johnson didn’t already provide them with a strong core of players and that they would be nothing without Kevin Garnett and Paul Pierce.
However, this takes it up to another level — when you go to Nets.com you are directed to the official site of the Boston Celtics.
Recent reports say that the site was hacked, but that is untrue. In reality, this is an old story that has changed somewhat. See, the Nets official site is actually www.BrooklynNets.com, not www.Nets.com. Nets.com was registered in 2002 by a New Mexico computer company. The owner has tried to sell the site to the Nets for an unknown, but expectedly large sum of money and the team has refused. Over the years the Nets.com URL has pointed at various other sites including Knicks.com at the start of last season.
Will it ever stop? Probably not. It is relatively inexpensive to own a domain name and if the Nets haven’t purchased it by now they aren’t likely to.
