The LIU Women’s Soccer team has been picked to finish second in the Northeast Conference this season after winning back-to-back NEC championships over the last two years, according to a coaches poll released on Tuesday.

The Blackbirds, lead by head coach Tracey Bartholomew, received three of the nine first place votes to finish second behind rival St. Francis University, who took home five first place votes. The only other school with any first place votes was Sacred Heart, who had just one.

LIU won the NEC title last year in a close 1-0 victory over St. Francis University, but lost 10 seniors to graduation since last season. They have added 12 new players to this year’s squad and will have senior goalkeeper Jess Sexton returning. Sexton hopes to play in her first full season since her freshman year when she set a school record with 10 shutouts.
