The LIU Brooklyn Women’s Volleyball team opened its season on Friday in Florida at the Campus USA Credit Union Invitational and lost its first game of the season 3-0 to Duke University. With an early 10:00 a.m. start for the Blackbirds, they lost sets 25-20, 25-23, and 25-18.

The first set was close with the Blackbirds leading 10-9 at one point, but then Duke went on a 8-0 run to take a 17-11. Led by sophomore Mirjana Rajic, LIU went on its own 8-1 run to regain the lead 19-18. That lead was short lived as Duke rallied back for the 25-20 win.

It looked like the Blackbirds would lead early and eventually build it up to 18-11, but Duke once again went on a big run, 10-2, and grabbed a 21-20 lead. It was eventually 23-23, but Duke scored the final two points for the win.

The third set was all Duke as they jumped ahead 17-9  en route to an easy 25-18 victory to sweep the match.
