GAME OF THE WEEK
WHO: Fort Hamilton (1-7 in 2012) vs. Poly Prep (6-3 in 2012)
WHEN: Saturday, Aug. 31 at 12:00 p.m.
WHERE: Poly Prep Country Day School
WHY IS THIS GAME IMPORTANT: This game is technically just a scrimmage, but there is much more at stake for this annual event — neighborhood bragging rights. Jay Hayes and Poly Prep beat Fort Hamilton 34-0 last season and will certainly want to show that they are still the team to beat in Bay Ridge. Meanwhile, Danny Perez wants to make up for last season’s poor 1-7 showing by getting off on the right foot during this rivalry game.
“It’s a neighborhood rivalry,” said Dino Mangiero, head coach of Poly Prep. “We play them every year, they were down a little last year, but historically it’s always been a really good game. Even last year it was 34-0, but it was a hard fought competitive game. It’s basically a scrimmage, but we’re certainly keeping score of this one. A lot of their kids wanted to come here and visa versa so there is a lot of pride at stake.”
Poly Prep is lead by Notre Dame commit Jay Hayes and a tough defensive squad that will give fits to any team it faces this year. Fort Hamilton is a bit of a question mark. Quarterback Adrian Maldonado and running back Isaiah Washington are expected to lead this team after they both basically missed all of last season with injuries.
“We had a young team last year, we went through a lot of injuries and we’re trying to turn it around this year,” Perez said. “We’re just trying to get back to fundamentals. We definitely expect a step in the right direction this weekend.”
