The ASA Avengers football team had a chance to land themselves on the cover of the National Junior College Athletic Association media guide in a fan voting contest, but missed out as New Mexico Military Institute’s football program won instead.
“Thank you Avengers fans for your support and votes during the NJCAA Football Media Guide Contest! We finished in 2nd Place out of the final four and will still have a place on the cover, alongside Snow College, Iowa Western and winner New Mexico Military Institute,” the school said in a statement. “We are proud to represent Brooklyn, New York City, the Northeast Football Conference and all of the East Coast on the cover – GO ASA!”
The ASA Avengers certainly had a chance and sat in second place throughout most of the voting. That was likely due to a very successful 9-1 season, a Northeast Football Conference championship, a spot in the inaugural Carrier Dome Bowl, and a No. 5 finish in the NJCAA rankings last year.
There was a brief issue during voting where people mentioned that they were getting a spam message prompt after they clicked on the link to go vote. However, the school said that it was a minor issue, if one at all, and that they didn’t think it affected the results as it was likely a problem for all schools involved not just ASA.
Either way, the Avengers will have a small part on the cover, even if it is not the featured team, and the school is gearing up for what should be another exciting season this year. They debut on Sept. 8 at Widener University for the first game of the season. They only play two games in Brooklyn this year, on Oct. 12 against Lackawanna College and on Nov. 2 against Louisburg College.
