The ASA Avengers will head into this season ranked tenth in a National Junior College Athletic Association coaches poll that was announced last week. It’s the first time in the school’s history they will begin the season as a ranked team after they finished last year at No. 5.
The Avengers, who have the only junior college football program in New York City, were a perfect 9-0 during the regular season a year ago, their only loss came against Snow College (No. 2) in the inaugural Carrier Dome Bowl. This marks a continued rise to prominence for the junior college that debuted on the scene in 2008.
Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College led the poll at No. 1, it finished last season with a 9-2 record. Snow College comes in at No. 2. The only other Northeast Football Conference team in the top 20 is Nassau Community College at No. 14.
The Avengers open their season on Sept. 8 at Widener University. Their first home game will be against Lackawanna College on Oct. 12. They face Nassau on the road on Nov. 9 in the final regular season game of the year.
