Thursday’s introductory press conference was only the second time that the Brooklyn Nets owner Mikhail Prokhorov had met with net head coach Jason Kidd so naturally reporters asked about the two. Prokhorov had nothing but great things to say about Kidd and even had a very funny analogy to explain the situation.
“Maybe you remember the film Top Gun,” Prokhorov said. “This film just arrived in Russia one week ago. I want to refresh your memory. Tom Cruise plays Maverick. He was a top pilot, he was a real leader, and at the end of the day he made a decision to be an instructor because it was the highest value just to be a leader. So Jason Kidd is our top gun.”
Maybe somebody should remind Prokhorov that Goose died in that film. Anyway, the entire conversation was pretty funny.
“There are players in the NBA that display the ability to coach when they are playing in terms of leadership, in terms of how they play, and in terms of being a team player,” Prokhorov said. “Jason Kidd was that kind of a player.
“I think Jason Kidd will be a superstar. He’s not a rookie coach. He’s a superstar coach.”
That’s a lot of pressure to put on a rookie coach, because no matter what Prokhorov says that’s exactly what he is. It makes me wonder how much slack Kidd will get. If the Nets are bounced from the playoffs in the first or second round this year, will Kidd be fired? What if he doesn’t lead Brooklyn to a championship within the next two years? Prokhorov said that he’s a man of results not of procedure. So it’s possible that there will be no explanation good enough if Kidd doesn’t deliver a championship that everyone was talking about on Thursday.
