The National Junior College Athletic Association launched a contest earlier this month to determine which college would be featured on the cover of the 2013 NJCAA Football media guide. The poll started on July 15 and wraps up on Aug. 7 and as of right now Brooklyn’s ASA Avengers are in second place with just over two weeks to go.
The Avengers are getting plenty of attention behind some impressive credentials — a 9-1 record last season, their first Northeast Football Conference championship and a spot in the inaugural Carrier Dome Bowl last season. They also finished at No. 5 in the NJCAA rankings last season.
The poll is being conducted in three rounds. The second round begins on Wednesday at noon and it will include eight teams so it’s highly likely that ASA makes the cut. The final round begins on July 31 with only four teams in the running. All voting ends on Aug. 7. Right now Snow (Utah), the team that beat ASA in the Carrier Dome Bowl last season, is in first place. Itawamba, NM Military, Iowa Western, Butler, Miss Gulf Coast, and East Mississippi are in the top eight.

ASA College is a private Junior College with campuses in Downtown Brooklyn and Manhattan. It launched an athletics division in 2008 with a basketball team and eventually expanded to include 13 sports playing in the NJCAA Division I.
