Joe Straszewski does an amazing job when it comes to covering high school sports in New York City which is why I want to highlight a couple of his articles over the next two days. The first is a look back at the top high school baseball players in Brooklyn.
Now unfortunately, and unlike in year’s past, I didn’t cover much baseball this season. I did get a chance to watch Bay Ridge’s Telecommunications which was the real deal and why I like Staszewski’s picks of center fielder Josh Palacio as the All-Brooklyn baseball player of the year and coach Ed D’Alessio as the All-Brooklyn baseball coach of the year.
Palacio could really hit and after watching him play, I was surprised that he wasn’t drafted. Well, MLB’s loss is Hofstra’s gain. Look for him in the draft three years from now. As for D’Alessio, he has always kept the Yellow Jackets competitive, but this year he did a great job getting them over the hump to their first championship in the school’s history. Very deserving of recognition in a tough Brooklyn division.
Here are the rest of Staszewski’s picks:
- Santo Duran, Grand Street Campus, RF
- Morgan Gray, Poly Prep, CF
- Chris Lee, Telecommunications, P
